Metric first — but keep imperial handy
The UK builds in metric. Merchants quote timber in millimetres, aggregate in tonnes, concrete in cubic metres, paint in litres and plasterboard in standard 2400 × 1200 mm sheets. Set every calculator to metric and you’ll match the delivery note.
That said, plenty of sites still talk in old money — a joiner will happily call a length “eight foot” and a plot might be quoted in acres. It’s a hangover, not a system, so convert it to metric before you order rather than trying to buy in feet. A handy anchor: a standard stud wall is 2.4 m high (near enough the old 8 ft), and sheet materials are built around that 1.2 m × 2.4 m module.
Speak the merchant’s language
Walk into a UK builders’ merchant asking for the American names and you’ll get a blank look. The kit is the same; the words aren’t:
- Plasterboard, not drywall or sheetrock. The skim coat on top is plaster.
- Timber, not lumber. Structural softwood is often CLS or carcassing.
- Aggregate, ballast and MOT Type 1 — not just “gravel”. Ballast is the sand-and-stone mix for concrete; MOT Type 1 is the crushed sub-base.
- Skip hire, not dumpster rental. Ordered by the yard (a “6-yard skip”).
- Render outside, plaster inside.
- Blocks (dense or aerated, e.g. Thermalite) rather than CMU.

Building Regulations that change what you buy
The Building Regulations for England (with close equivalents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) decide a lot of your material spec before you’ve measured anything:
- Part L (conservation of fuel and power) — drives insulation thickness and U-values. It’s why loft rolls are now typically 270 mm and why wall build-ups keep getting fatter. Estimate insulation by the depth Part L pushes you to, not the old thin rolls.
- Part B (fire safety) — dictates fire-rated plasterboard, cavity barriers and, since the 2018 ban on combustible cladding for tall residential buildings, what you can and can’t put on a facade.
- Part A (structure) — governs foundation depth, lintel sizing and beam spans, which feeds straight into your concrete and steel quantities.
- Part C (moisture) — damp-proof courses and membranes, a must in a wet climate.
Always confirm the current spec for your project — estimates here are for quantities, not a substitute for Building Control sign-off or a structural engineer.
The British building season (and the wet winter problem)
The UK’s weather sets a rhythm. Spring to early autumn is prime time — groundworks, concrete, render and external masonry all want dry, mild conditions, so merchants are busiest and lead times stretch. Order early in the season.
The real enemy is the wet, mild winter rather than deep freeze. Mortar and concrete don’t like laying below about 3–5°C, render washes off in driving rain, and waterlogged ground makes excavation and muck-away miserable. If you must work through winter, budget for frost protection, admixtures and a bit more waste. This is also why Part C damp detailing matters so much here — build it wet and it stays wet.
Practical upshot: buy weather-sensitive materials close to when you’ll use them (cement goes off if stored damp), and don’t assume a delivery slot in July is as quick as one in February.
A worked UK example: a garden wall
Say you’re building a single-skin garden wall, 6 m long and 1.2 m high, in standard UK bricks (215 × 102.5 × 65 mm). At 60 bricks per square metre for a half-brick wall, that’s 6 × 1.2 = 7.2 m², so roughly 7.2 × 60 = 432 bricks. Add 10% waste and you’re ordering around 475 — or nearer 480 to buy whole packs.

What units should I use for building materials in the UK?

How much loft insulation do I need under Part L?
Current guidance under Building Regulations Part L points to roughly 270 mm of mineral wool loft insulation to hit the required U-value, usually built up in two layers laid at right angles. What’s the difference between ballast, aggregate and MOT Type 1?
They’re all aggregates but for different jobs. Ballast is a mixed sand-and-stone blend used to make concrete. MOT Type 1 is a graded crushed stone used as a compacted sub-base under driveways, patios and paths. “Aggregate” is the general term. Can I lay concrete or mortar in winter in the UK?
You can, but with care. Mortar and concrete shouldn’t be laid below about 3–5°C, and driving rain will damage fresh render and mortar. In a British winter the bigger problem is usually wet rather than hard frost. If you must work through winter, use frost protection, consider admixtures, allow extra time and buy cement close to when you’ll use it so it doesn’t spoil.
Is a 2.4 m stud wall the UK standard?
Yes. UK internal walls are typically framed to 2.4 m (close to the old 8 ft), and sheet materials like plasterboard and OSB come in a 1.2 m x 2.4 m module to suit.
