Imperial all the way: feet, yards, pounds
US construction runs on imperial units, and each material has its own customary one. Lumber is sold by the linear foot and priced by the board foot. Concrete is ordered by the cubic yard (“a yard of concrete”). Gravel and stone come by the ton. Paint is by the gallon, roofing by the square (100 sq ft), and drywall in 4 × 8 ft sheets.
Set the calculators to imperial and you’ll speak the same language as your supplier. The one conversion worth memorizing: 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. That’s the number that turns a slab’s length × width × thickness in feet into the yards the concrete truck is measured in.
Nominal vs actual: the 2x4 that isn’t
Here’s the one that trips up every beginner. A 2×4 is not 2 inches by 4 inches. That’s the nominal size (the rough-sawn dimension); the actual dressed size is 1½” × 3½”. Same story down the line:
- 2×4 → actually 1½” × 3½”
- 2×6 → actually 1½” × 5½”
- 2×10 → actually 1½” × 9¼”
- 1×6 → actually ¾” × 5½”
Lengths, though, are honest — an 8-foot stud really is 8 feet. When you lay out walls at 16” on center (or 24” for some framing), use nominal names to buy but actual sizes to check that things fit. Our lumber calculator handles board feet so you’re not doing fraction math on a tailgate.
IRC, IBC and why local codes rule
Two model codes shape most US material specs: the IRC (International Residential Code) for one- and two-family homes, and the IBC (International Building Code) for commercial and larger structures. Most jurisdictions adopt a version of these — but the edition and the local amendments vary by state, county and even city.
- Framing & spans — the IRC span tables set joist and rafter sizes, which drives your lumber order.
- Insulation — the IECC energy code sets minimum R-values by climate zone, so how much insulation you buy depends on where you build.
- Wind & seismic — hurricane straps in the Gulf and Southeast, seismic detailing on the West Coast, extra fasteners and hardware in both.
- Fire — Type X drywall where rated assemblies are required (garages, party walls).
Always check with your local building department and pull permits — these calculators give quantities, not code compliance.
Regional climate changes the material list
The US is really several climates in a trench coat, and each one bends your material choices:
- Northeast & Midwest — hard freezes mean deep frost-line footings, ice-and-water shield on roofs, and a pour season that shuts down in deep winter.
- South & Gulf — heat, humidity and hurricanes: treated lumber, moisture-resistant sheathing, impact-rated openings and hurricane ties.
- West & Southwest — seismic hardware, plus stucco and tile over shingles in the arid, sun-baked zones.
- Pacific Northwest — relentless rain drives rainscreen detailing and rot-resistant materials.
Your IECC climate zone also sets insulation R-values, so a wall in Minnesota and one in Texas need different amounts of the same product. Estimate insulation to your zone’s R-value, not a national average.
A worked US example: a concrete slab
Pouring a 20 ft × 24 ft shed slab at 4 inches thick. Convert the thickness to feet (4” = 0.333 ft), then volume = 20 × 24 × 0.333 = 160 cubic feet. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards: 160 ÷ 27 ≈ 5.9 cubic yards. Add about 10% for spillage and uneven subgrade and you’d order 6.5 yards — most suppliers sell in quarter-yard steps.

Frequently asked questions
How many cubic feet are in a yard of concrete?
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. To size a slab, multiply length x width x thickness in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards — the unit ready-mix concrete is sold in. Add roughly 10% for spillage and uneven subgrade, and remember suppliers usually deliver in quarter-yard increments. The concrete calculator does this for you.
Why is a 2x4 not actually 2 inches by 4 inches?
The 2x4 is the nominal (rough-sawn) size. After the lumber is dried and planed smooth, the actual dressed size is 1½ inches by 3½ inches. The same applies to other dimensional lumber — a 2x6 is really 1½ by 5½, a 2x10 is 1½ by 9¼. Lengths are accurate, so an 8-foot stud is genuinely 8 feet. Buy by the nominal name but check fit against the actual size.
What building code applies to my project in the US?
Most homes follow a version of the IRC (International Residential Code) and commercial or larger buildings follow the IBC (International Building Code), but the exact edition and amendments are set by your state, county or city. Energy requirements come from the IECC and vary by climate zone. Always confirm the adopted code and pull permits with your local building department — estimates give quantities, not compliance.
How much insulation do I need for my climate zone?
It depends on your IECC climate zone, which sets minimum R-values for walls, ceilings and floors. A ceiling might need R-38 in a cold zone but less in the South, so the same batts cover the area differently. Estimate insulation to your zone’s required R-value rather than a national average, and use the insulation calculator to turn area into rolls or batts.
How is roofing measured in the US?
By the “square,” which equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingles are sold in bundles, typically three bundles per square. Measure the actual sloped area of the roof (not the building footprint), divide by 100 for squares, then add waste for hips, valleys and starter courses.
