How to Use This Calculator

How to Use the Plaster Calculator

  1. Choose metric or imperial units with the toggle.
  2. Either enter the total area directly, or switch to Work it out from dimensions and enter your room length, width and wall height — the calculator adds up the walls and (optionally) the ceiling for you.
  3. Enter the average plaster thickness — typically 10–15 mm (about 0.4–0.6 in).
  4. Enter the coverage stated on your plaster bag, plus the price per bag and your currency.

Why Accurate Plaster Calculation Matters

Working out quantities up front helps you avoid running short mid-job or wasting material. Over-ordering ties up money, while under-ordering causes delays — a quick estimate keeps your project moving and your budget on track.

How the Numbers Are Worked Out

  • Area from dimensions = walls (2 × (length + width) × height) plus ceiling (length × width) if selected.
  • Plaster volume = area × thickness (converted to metres).
  • Plaster weight = volume × a standard density of 850 kg/m³ (about 53 lb/ft³), shown in kg for metric or lb for imperial.
  • Bags needed = area ÷ coverage per bag, always rounded up to the next whole bag.
  • Total cost = bags needed × your price per bag in the chosen currency.

Tips for Buying Plaster

  • Always round up to the next whole bag so you don't run short.
  • Buy a little extra for repairs, mistakes, or uneven surfaces.
  • This estimate covers plaster material and cost only — budget separately for beads, scrim tape and labour.

Common Questions

Do I have to work out the area myself?

No. Switch to "Work it out from dimensions" and enter the room length, width and wall height. The calculator multiplies them out for the walls, and can add the ceiling too, so you don’t need to do the maths by hand. You can still type a total area directly if you prefer.

How do I measure the area to plaster?

Measure the length and height of each wall, multiply them to get the area, and add together for all walls and ceilings to get the total. Or just use the dimensions mode and let the calculator do it.

What thickness should I use for plaster?

Typical plaster thickness is 10–15 mm (about 0.4–0.6 in), but always check your project requirements or follow manufacturer guidelines.

What if my plaster bag coverage is different from the default?

Simply input the coverage stated on your plaster bag packaging to get an accurate calculation based on your specific product.

How is the total plaster weight calculated?

The calculator multiplies the volume of plaster needed by a standard density (850 kg/m³ or 53 lb/ft³) to estimate the total plaster mass.

Does this calculator include labour or accessory costs?

No, it only estimates the plaster material needed and its cost. Always budget separately for labour and other materials like beads or scrim tape.
