How to Use This Calculator

How to Use

  1. Choose the type of aggregate you are ordering.
  2. Enter the length, width and depth of the area.
  3. The calculator works out the volume and weight using the right density.

Tips

  • Different aggregates weigh different amounts – MOT Type 1 is heavier than gravel.
  • One bulk bag holds roughly 850 kg (just under a tonne).
  • Add 10% extra for compaction on sub-base materials.

Common Questions

How do I calculate how much aggregate I need?

Multiply length × width × depth to find the volume, then multiply by the material density to get the weight in tonnes. Pick your material above and this calculator does it automatically.

How much does a bulk bag of aggregate cover?

A bulk bag holds around 850 kg. As a rough guide it covers about 10 m² at 50 mm deep, depending on the material.

Which aggregate is heaviest?

Compacted sub-bases like MOT Type 1 are the heaviest at around 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre, while loose gravel and topsoil are lighter at 1.4–1.5 tonnes.
