Estimating materials in Australia comes with its own quirks: everything’s metric, the blocks are “besser” and the roof is “Colorbond”, the seasons are upside down compared with the northern hemisphere, and if you’re anywhere bushfire-prone your BAL rating can decide the whole material list before you start.

Metric, and proudly so
Australia went fully metric decades ago and never looked back. Timber framing is specified in millimetres (90 × 45 mm studs, not 2×4s), concrete is ordered in cubic metres, soil and aggregate by the tonne or cubic metre, paint in litres, and plasterboard in metric sheets (commonly 1200 × 2400 or 3600 mm).
Set every calculator to metric and you’ll match your local Bunnings or building supplier exactly. Unlike the UK there’s very little imperial hangover on site — if a plan shows anything in feet it’s almost certainly imported, so convert it to millimetres before you order.
Aussie material names
The gear has a distinctly local vocabulary:
- Besser blocks — the everyday word for hollow concrete masonry blocks (from the Besser brand), used for walls and often core-filled with concrete.
- Colorbond — pre-finished steel roofing and fencing, so common the brand name is the category. Measured and ordered like other metal roofing sheets.
- Gyprock / plasterboard — not drywall.
- Timber, in mm — not lumber. Treated pine and hardwood are the framing and decking staples.
- Skip bins — not skips or dumpsters.
- Blue metal — crushed basalt aggregate used in concrete and drainage.
- Rendered masonry outside; plasterboard lined inside.
The NCC / BCA and what it specs
Building work is governed by the National Construction Code (NCC), whose Volumes One and Two are also known as the Building Code of Australia (BCA). It’s administered by the states and territories, each with its own tweaks, and it sets a lot of your materials:
- Energy efficiency — minimum insulation R-values by climate zone (Australia has eight), driving how many batts you buy.
- Structure & wind — wind classification (N1–N6, C1–C4 in cyclone regions) dictates tie-down, bracing and fixings, especially in Queensland and the north.
- Termite management — a real driver here: treated timber, termite barriers and steel where needed.
- Bushfire — see BAL ratings below.

BAL ratings: bushfire changes everything
If you build in a designated bushfire-prone area, your Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) — assessed under AS 3959 — directly determines what materials you’re allowed to use. The levels run BAL-LOW, 12.5, 19, 29, 40 and BAL-FZ (Flame Zone), and the higher you go, the tougher the spec:
- Non-combustible or bushfire-resisting timber for decking and cladding.
- Ember-proof screening on gaps, vents and weep holes.
- Toughened glazing, steel or bushfire-rated frames.
- Colorbond steel roofing and sarking rated to the level.
This can rule out materials you’d otherwise pick, so establish your BAL before you estimate — it’s cheaper to design to it than to re-spec halfway through.
Reversed seasons and a split climate
Remember the calendar flips. In Australia the building season peaks over spring and summer (roughly September to March) — the opposite of the northern hemisphere — so that’s when merchants are flat out and lead times stretch. Plan concrete pours and external work around it.
Climate splits the country in two. The north (Queensland, NT, northern WA) runs on a wet-season/dry-season cycle: avoid pouring and roofing during the tropical wet, and build cyclone tie-down into the north’s material list. The south is more temperate with hot, dry summers — great for building but brutal on curing concrete, which can flash-off and crack in the heat, so plan for hot-weather concreting and don’t store timber or boards in full sun.
A worked Aussie example: a besser block wall
Building a 10 m long, 1.5 m high retaining wall in standard 390 × 190 × 190 mm besser blocks. At about 12.5 blocks per square metre, area = 10 × 1.5 = 15 m², so roughly 15 × 12.5 = 188 blocks, plus around 5–10% waste → order about 205.
A retaining wall also needs a concrete footing, core-fill and steel to the engineer’s detail, plus drainage aggregate (blue metal) and ag pipe behind it. Higher ratings require bushfire-resisting or non-combustible materials, ember screening, toughened glazing and rated roofing such as Colorbond steel. Establish your BAL before estimating, because it can rule out materials you’d otherwise choose.
When is the best time of year to build in Australia?
Spring and summer (roughly September to March) is the main building season — the reverse of the northern hemisphere — so suppliers are busiest then. In the tropical north, avoid the wet season for pouring and roofing and build cyclone tie-down into your list. In the south, watch out for hot-weather concreting in summer, as heat can make concrete cure too fast and crack.
