How to Use This Calculator

What This Brick Calculator Does

This brick calculator turns your wall dimensions into a materials list: it works out the wall area, deducts any door and window openings, then multiplies by the bricks-per-square-metre figure for your chosen brick size and adds a mortar estimate. It saves you doing the maths by hand and helps you order the right number of packs.

How to Use

  1. Enter the wall length and height.
  2. Enter the total area of any openings (doors and windows) to deduct.
  3. Choose the brick size and a waste percentage.

Bricks Needed per Square Metre

Wall typeBricks per m²Notes
Half-brick (single skin)~60Standard 215×102.5×65 mm brick, 10 mm joints
One-brick (double skin)~120Two skins, e.g. a solid wall
Cavity wall (brick + block)~60 + blocksOuter brick skin plus a block inner leaf

Worked Example

A single-skin garden wall 5 m long and 1.8 m high has an area of 9 m². At about 60 bricks per m² that is 540 bricks, plus roughly 5–10% for cuts and breakages – so order around 570–600 bricks. This calculator does that sum instantly and adds the mortar.

Tips

  • Standard UK bricks are 215×102.5×65 mm (about 60 per m² for a half-brick wall).
  • Allow 5–10% extra for cuts and breakage.
  • Bricks are usually sold in packs of 400–500 – round up to whole packs.

Common Questions

How does this brick calculator work?

This brick calculator multiplies your net wall area (after deducting openings) by the number of bricks per square metre for your chosen brick size, then adds your waste allowance and a mortar estimate to give the total bricks and mortar bags you need.

How many bricks per square metre?

For standard UK bricks (215×102.5×65 mm) with 10 mm mortar joints, you need about 60 bricks per m² for a half-brick (single skin) wall, or about 120 per m² for a one-brick (double skin) wall.

How much mortar for 1000 bricks?

Roughly 7 bags of 25 kg mortar mix for 1000 standard bricks, depending on joint thickness and wastage.

How many bricks are on a pallet?

A typical pack or pallet of facing bricks holds around 400–500 bricks, though it varies by manufacturer and brick size. Always check the pack quantity before ordering so you buy enough packs.

How much extra should I order for waste?

Allow about 5% extra for cuts at openings, breakages and the odd damaged brick. The waste field in this calculator lets you add this on automatically.
