How to Use This Calculator

How to Use

  1. Enter the volume of material you have.
  2. Choose the unit your volume is in — cubic yards, cubic feet, cubic metres or litres.
  3. Select the material so we can apply a realistic density.

Why density matters

Different materials weigh very different amounts for the same volume. A cubic metre of dry gravel weighs around 1.5 tonnes, while a cubic metre of MOT Type 1 sub-base is closer to 2 tonnes. Always order by weight when your supplier sells by the tonne.

Densities used (tonnes per m³)

  • Gravel 1.5, Sand 1.6, Topsoil 1.3
  • Crushed stone 1.6, MOT Type 1 2.0, Ballast 1.75, Concrete 2.4

Common Questions

How many tonnes are in a cubic yard of gravel?

About 1.15 tonnes, since a cubic yard is 0.765 cubic metres and gravel weighs roughly 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre.

Is a US ton the same as a tonne?

No. A metric tonne is 1000 kg, while a US (short) ton is about 907 kg. We show both so you can match your supplier.

Are these densities exact?

They are typical averages. Moisture content and how compacted the material is will change the real weight, so treat the result as a close estimate.

Why do I need the material density to convert volume to weight?

Because a cubic yard of light mulch weighs far less than a cubic yard of gravel. Density tells you how heavy each material is for its volume.

How many tonnes is a cubic yard of gravel?

About 1.2–1.4 tonnes, depending on gravel type and moisture. The calculator applies a realistic density for each material you choose.
