How it is calculated

First, convert all measurements to millimetres (if metric) or inches (if imperial). Calculate net wall length by subtracting total door widths. The number of studs is the net wall length divided by stud spacing, plus one (for the end), plus two extra studs per door opening, rounded up. The number of plates is the total length of wall (including over doors) times two (for top and bottom), divided by plate length, rounded up. Total cost is (number of studs × stud price) + (number of plates × plate price).

Worked example

Inputs: Metric, wall length 3.6m, wall height 2.4m, stud spacing 400mm, 1 door (0.8m), stud price £2.50, plate price £3.00, stud length 2.4m, plate length 2.4m. Net wall length: 3.6m - 0.8m = 2.8m. 2.8m/0.4m = 7, plus 1 = 8 main studs. 2 door studs = 2. Total studs = 10. Plate total length: 3.6m × 2 = 7.2m. 7.2m/2.4m = 3. Plates needed = 3. Total cost: (10 × £2.50) + (3 × £3.00) = £25.00 + £9.00 = £34.00.
