How to Use This Calculator

Use this partition wall material calculator to quickly estimate the number of studs, plasterboard sheets, insulation area and total cost needed to build a stud partition wall. Enter your wall dimensions, material preferences and currency to get a complete, accurate breakdown – perfect for both DIY and professional projects.

How it is calculated

Calculate the number of studs by dividing the wall length by the stud spacing and adding one for the end. Add two times the wall length for the top and bottom plates. The number of plasterboard sheets is total wall area (length x height x sides) divided by board area, rounded up. If insulation is included, area is wall length x wall height. Total cost is sum of (stud length x price per unit) + (boards x price per sheet) + (if insulation, insulation area x price per unit). Adjust all units for metric/imperial as needed.

Worked example

Inputs: Metric, wall length 4 m, wall height 2.4 m, stud spacing 0.6 m, both sides to clad, board size 2.88 m², include insulation Yes, insulation thickness 50 mm, GBP, stud price per m £2.50, board price per sheet £10, insulation price per m² £5. Studs: ceil(4/0.6)+1=8. Top/bottom plates: 2x4=8 m. Total stud length: (8x2.4)+8=27.2 m. Wall area: 4x2.4x2=19.2 m². Boards: ceil(19.2/2.88)=7. Insulation area: 4x2.4=9.6 m². Total cost: (27.2x2.5)+(7x10)+(9.6x5)=£68+£70+£48=£186.

How to Estimate Materials for a Partition Wall

Accurately estimating materials for a stud partition wall ensures you buy exactly what you need, saving time and money. This calculator works out the number of studs, total stud length, plasterboard sheets and insulation needed based on your wall size and preferences.

Understanding Stud Spacing and Wall Construction

Common stud spacings are 400mm (16") or 600mm (24"), which affect both structural strength and material requirements. Always check building codes in your region. Remember to include top and bottom plates in your stud length calculation.

Choosing Plasterboard and Insulation

Plasterboard comes in several standard sizes. Select the sheet size that best suits your project to minimise waste. For sound or thermal performance, include insulation – the calculator estimates area based on your wall size.

Partition Wall Costs and Budgeting

Material costs can vary by region and supplier. Input your local prices per stud, plasterboard sheet, and insulation to get a tailored cost estimate in your chosen currency. This helps avoid budget surprises and ensures your project stays on track.

Common Questions

How much does it cost to build a partition wall?

The cost to build a partition wall depends on the wall size, materials, and your location. Use this calculator to estimate material quantities and total cost by entering your dimensions and local prices for studs, plasterboard, and insulation.

What are partition walls made of?

Partition walls are commonly made of a timber or metal stud frame, covered on one or both sides with plasterboard (drywall), and may include insulation for sound or thermal performance.

How thick are partition walls?

Typical partition wall thickness ranges from 75mm to 100mm (about 3 to 4 inches), depending on stud size, plasterboard thickness, and whether insulation is used.

How to build a partition wall yourself?

To build a partition wall, mark out the wall line, fix the top and bottom plates, install vertical studs at your chosen spacing, add noggins, then attach plasterboard. Add insulation before boarding if needed. Always check local regulations.

How is insulation calculated for a partition wall?

Insulation is calculated by multiplying the wall length by its height, giving the area to be filled. This calculator does it automatically if you select the insulation option.
