How to Use the Flooring Cost Calculator

  1. Choose metric or imperial units and your currency.
  2. Enter the room length and width to get the floor area.
  3. Add a waste allowance — 10% is typical for straight-laid floors, more for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
  4. Either enter a simple price per unit area, or enter the pack coverage and price per pack for a more accurate pack count. Add an optional underlay price per unit area.

How the Cost Is Worked Out

  • Area to buy = room area × (1 + waste %).
  • By pack: packs = area to buy ÷ pack coverage (rounded up), then cost = packs × price per pack.
  • By area: cost = area to buy × price per unit area.
  • Underlay = room area × underlay price per unit area.

Tips

  • Laminate and engineered wood are sold by the pack — use the pack mode for the most accurate count.
  • Buy from the same batch to avoid slight colour variation between packs.
  • This is a material estimate — add trims, adhesive/underlay tape and fitting labour separately.

Common Questions

Should I price by area or by pack?

By pack is more accurate because flooring is sold in whole packs and you always round up. Use the simple price-per-area mode only for a quick ballpark.

How much waste should I allow for flooring?

Around 10% for a standard straight lay, and 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns or rooms with lots of cuts and alcoves.

Do I need underlay?

Most laminate and engineered floors need underlay for comfort, sound and moisture protection. Add its cost per unit area using the optional field.

Does this include fitting?

No, it estimates materials only. Fitting is usually charged per square metre or as a day rate — get a separate quote.

Does the flooring cost include fitting?

The calculator estimates materials (flooring plus underlay and waste). Add a separate figure for fitting if you are hiring a professional, as labour varies by region.
