How to Use This Calculator

How to Use the Tile Cost Calculator

  1. Choose metric or imperial units and your currency.
  2. Enter the length and width of the area you are tiling.
  3. Enter the size of a single tile (width × height).
  4. Add a waste allowance — 10% for straight lays, more for diagonal or patterned layouts — then the price per tile and any flat cost for adhesive and grout.

How the Cost Is Worked Out

  • Tiling area = length × width.
  • Tile area = tile width × tile height.
  • Tiles needed = (area × (1 + waste %)) ÷ tile area, rounded up.
  • Total = tiles × price per tile + adhesive/grout and extras.

Tips

  • If your tiles are priced per box, divide the box price by the number of tiles per box to get the price per tile.
  • Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs.
  • This is a material estimate — trims, spacers and fitting labour are extra.

Common Questions

How many tiles do I need?

Divide the area you are tiling (plus a waste allowance) by the area of a single tile, then round up. This calculator does that for you from the room and tile dimensions.

How much waste should I add for tiling?

Allow about 10% for a standard straight lay, and 15–20% for diagonal, brick-bond or patterned layouts and rooms with many cuts.

My tiles are sold by the box — how do I price them?

Work out the price per tile by dividing the box price by the number of tiles per box, then enter that figure. Round the final tile count up to whole boxes when ordering.

Does this include adhesive and grout?

Only if you add them under “adhesive, grout & extras” as a flat figure. Use our dedicated tile, adhesive and grout calculators for detailed quantities.

Should I include adhesive and grout in my tiling budget?

Yes — adhesive and grout can add a noticeable amount on top of the tiles themselves. The calculator includes both so your estimate is realistic.
