How to Use This Calculator

How to Use

  1. Enter the deck length and width.
  2. Enter the deck board width and the gap you want between boards.
  3. Enter the length of the boards you are buying.
  4. Add a waste percentage for cuts and offcuts (5–10% is typical).

Tips

  • Standard composite/timber deck boards are about 5.5" (140 mm) wide.
  • Leave a 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") gap for drainage and timber movement.
  • Lay boards perpendicular to the joists for a stronger deck.

Common Questions

How many deck boards do I need?

Divide the deck width by the board width plus gap to get the number of rows, then multiply by the number of board lengths needed to span the deck length. This calculator does it for you and adds waste.

What gap should I leave between deck boards?

A gap of 3–6 mm (1/8 to 1/4 inch) is recommended for drainage and to allow the timber to expand and contract. Composite boards often need slightly larger gaps — check the manufacturer guidance.

How much waste should I allow for decking?

Allow 5–10% extra for cuts, offcuts and mistakes. Use the higher end for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
