How to Use This Calculator

How to Use

  1. Pick the mix you are using – concrete mixes include aggregate, mortar mixes are just cement and sand.
  2. Enter the length, width and depth of the pour or bed.
  3. Add a little waste, then read off the bags of cement, sand and aggregate.

Tips

  • A 1:2:4 mix is a good general-purpose concrete; use 1:3:6 for foundations.
  • Cement is sold in 25 kg bags in the UK – there are 40 bags to a tonne.
  • Mortar for bricklaying is usually mixed 1:4 to 1:6 cement to sand.

Common Questions

How many bags of cement per cubic metre of concrete?

A standard 1:2:4 concrete mix needs roughly 14 bags of 25 kg cement per cubic metre, along with about 0.7 m³ of sand and aggregate combined.

What is the difference between cement and concrete?

Cement is the powder binder. Concrete is cement mixed with sand and coarse aggregate plus water. This calculator shows how much of each you need.

What mix ratio should I use?

Use 1:2:4 for general concrete, 1:1.5:3 for stronger structural work, 1:3:6 for foundations, and 1:4 to 1:6 cement to sand for mortar.
