How to Use This Calculator

What this grout calculator does

This grout calculator estimates how much tile grout you need to fill the joints between tiles, based on tile size, thickness, joint width and area. It returns the grout weight so you know how many bags to buy – for wall or floor tiling, in metric or imperial.

How to use it

  1. Enter the total area to be grouted.
  2. Enter your tile length, width and thickness.
  3. Enter the joint (gap) width and a small waste allowance.

Why the inputs matter

FactorEffect on grout
Smaller tilesMore joints → more grout
Thicker tilesDeeper joints → more grout
Wider jointsMore grout

Worked example

Mosaic and small tiles use far more grout per m² than large-format tiles because there are many more joints. That's why entering the real tile size matters – a 600×600 mm floor uses only a fraction of the grout a 100×100 mm floor needs over the same area.

Tips

  • Typical joints: 2–3 mm for walls, 3–5 mm for floors.
  • Use a flexible, waterproof grout in wet areas (showers, wet rooms).
  • Mix only what you can use before it starts to go off (“pot life”).

Common Questions

How wide should grout joints be?

For wall tiles, 2–3 mm is standard. For floor tiles, 3–5 mm. Large format tiles (600 mm+) can use 2 mm joints with rectified edges.

How long does grout take to dry?

Initial set is 24–48 hours. Full cure takes 7–28 days depending on the product and conditions.

What is the difference between sanded and unsanded grout?

Sanded grout is for joints wider than 3 mm (1/8 in) – it is stronger and shrinks less. Unsanded grout is smoother and better for narrow joints and polished tile.

How do I work out how much grout I need?

Grout depends on tile size, joint width and tile thickness. The calculator combines these to estimate the kilograms of grout for your area.

Do I need to seal grout?

Cement-based grout benefits from sealing in wet areas like showers and floors to resist staining and water. Epoxy grout is already waterproof and does not need sealing.
