How to Use This Calculator

How to use the fence cost calculator

Choose your units and enter the total fence length and panel width, then add the price per panel, per post, and the concrete/postcrete cost per post. The tool multiplies out the materials and gives a total budget — useful for comparing quotes or planning a DIY build. It is currency-neutral, so enter prices in whatever currency you use.

What drives the cost

ItemNotes
PanelsBiggest single cost; timber cheaper than composite
PostsOne more than the panel count
Concrete / postcrete1–2 bags per post
Gravel boards + capsOptional but extend fence life

Worked example

A 15-panel fence at 40 per panel, 16 posts at 12 each, and 20 for concrete = 600 + 192 + 20 = 812 in materials, before labour. Adding gravel boards at 8 each would add another 120.

Tip: get an accurate panel and post count first (use the fence panel calculator), then price each part — supplier “per metre” or “per foot” quotes often hide the extras.

Common Questions

How many posts do I need for a fence?

Always one more than the number of panels — each panel sits between two posts, so a 5-panel run needs 6 posts. This calculator works that out automatically.

What is the standard fence panel width?

In the UK, fence panels are typically 1.83 m (6 ft) wide. The calculator uses this as the default, but you can enter any panel width.

Should I include concrete in the cost?

Yes — most posts are set in concrete or postcrete. Enter the cost per post (usually one or two bags of postcrete each) so it is included in the total.

Does this include labour?

No, it estimates materials only. If you are hiring a fitter, get a separate labour quote based on the fence length and ground conditions.

How can I reduce the cost of a new fence?

Choosing standard panel sizes, setting posts yourself and avoiding bespoke heights all cut costs. The calculator lets you compare options by adjusting the prices.
