How to Use This Calculator

How to Use

  1. Choose whether you are converting square feet to linear feet, or linear feet to square feet.
  2. Enter the area or length.
  3. Enter the width of your board or material in inches.

Linear feet vs square feet

Linear feet measure length only, regardless of width — useful when material is sold by the running length, like decking boards, trim and fencing. Square feet measure area. To convert between them you need the material width.

Tips

Always add a waste allowance for cuts and offcuts when ordering boards. Remember board width here is the coverage width; tongue-and-groove boards cover slightly less than their full width.

Common Questions

What is the difference between linear feet and square feet?

Linear feet measure length only, while square feet measure area. To convert between them you must know the width of the material.

How do I convert square feet to linear feet?

Divide the area in square feet by the board width in feet. For 6in wide boards, divide by 0.5. The calculator does this for you.

How do I convert linear feet to square feet?

Multiply the linear feet by the board width in feet. So 100 linear feet of 6in board covers 50 square feet.

Why is material sold in linear feet?

Long, narrow products like decking, trim, skirting and fencing rails come in fixed widths, so they are priced and sold by length.

Should I add waste to the linear feet?

Yes. Add around 10 percent for cuts, offcuts and damaged boards so you do not run short during the job.
